What is Taranaki?
Geography: - Midway between Auckland and Wellington, Taranaki is the region on the West coast of the North Island of New Zealand.
- Taranaki is one of the world's premier dairy industry locations as well as the region where all of New Zealand's proven oil and gas reserves have been discovered.
- On the back of this, Taranaki's engineering sector has become internationally respected for its innovative, cost effective and technical approach to projects. The sector has tackled some of the world's technically logistically demanding projects, and delivered them on budget, on time.
Engineering Capability: - The Taranaki region is home to up to 200 specialist engineering-related manufacturing, fabrication, design and support companies and is rightfully deemed New Zealand's premier centre of applied engineering. These companies represent about 1500 qualified tradesmen and up to 300 professional engineers.
- To better meet client needs and further enhance the sector, about 100 of these companies have grouped together under the banner of Centre of Applied Engineering New Zealand (CApENZ), led by Engineering Taranaki Consortium.
Infrastructure & Support: - Developed to meet the needs of the agricultural, dairy, engineering and oil & gas industries, Taranaki boasts a comprehensive service and transport infrastructure, including a heavy haul route direct to the port. Port Taranaki is the only deep-water export port along New Zealand's western seaboard, the port that is also the closest to Australia and South-East Asia. Direct road and rail routes link Taranaki to the rest of New Zealand. New Plymouth airport has frequent daily flights to Auckland and Wellington.
- Through the Centre of Applied Engineering (CApENZ) initiative, there is an increasing capacity locally for industry specific research and development, led by the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki, Taranaki's tertiary education institution.
- Taranaki's world-class support sector also includes sophisticated, non-destructive testing and inspection facilities, corrosion protection expertise, and state of the art surveying services. Taranaki is also supported by New Zealand's two leading steel and metals suppliers, Steel & Tube Distribution and Fletcher EasySteel.
