1. Procurement / Collective Purchasing The fundamental aim of this element will be to enable member to become even more competitive by either reducing the costs incurred by individual firms on purchasing certain products or services, or by helping to simplify the buying process. What this means: The Procurement or Collective Purchasing part of CApENZ is headed by Bev Batchelar. CApENZ members can achieve better purchasing power than as individual companies alone. Examples: Areas that are currently being worked on include: - Fuel discounts
- Vehicle fleet discounts (lease/hire/purchase)
- Insurance
- Telecommunications (especially mobile telecommunications)
- Consummables
- Energy (gas and power)
- Raw materials (such as steel and metals supply)
- Better ways of purchasing (payment terms, better delivery cycles, etc)
What to Do: Contact us with any areas you wish us to look at. Bev will be in touch with all procurement opportunities as they arise. New Product Development To assist the Taranaki Engineering sector to move away from the traditional project driven economic cycle, CApENZ is assisting with New Product Development Guidance. What this means: Led by Kristian Slack, CApENZ will assist companies with securing research grants and assistance, as well as assisting with commercialisation, i.e. getting new ideas to market. Please note that this applies equally to new products, new services and new processes. Examples: - Kristian has already secured several research grants for CApENZ members, and is working on a number of commercialisation products for different industries: electrical, automotive and marine.
What to Do: Click here to contact Kristian Slack. He will happily sign a confidentiality agreement before discussions begin. Benefits: Only services of its kind in New Zealand. Assists with project management of new products from Ideation to Commercialisation. Provides technical advice through various stages of the process. Provide guidance through Patents, Intellectual Property and Funding. 3. Sales Growth The CApENZ team can help in various ways with Business Development, many of which have been used by Engineering Taranaki Consortium and the Oil & Gas Specialist Technologies Cluster already. What this means: Led by Ambrose Blowfield, the CApENZ team can assist members in areas such as: - Helping to identify and develop alliances and partnerships between CApENZ members and suitable overseas or New Zealand companies.
- Assisting with gathering relevant market intelligence to assist CApENZ members in areas such as: identifying markets for existing products and services, seeking new business opportunities, and identifying products or services that could be supplied by CApENZ members.
- Joint approach to trade shows and conferences.
- Targeting international EPC and engineering companies to be on appropriate tender and pre-qualification listings.
- Work closely with New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, the Industry Capability Network and other international trade posts.
Examples: - We are hosting a stand at the Australian National Manufacturing Week Exhibition in Sydney from 1st to 4th June 2004. By encompassing eleven different events in one, the National Manufacturing Week is the largest single manufacturing event in Australia. It is expected to host over 500 exhibitors and over 15000 trade visitors at the event. As well as promoting the Centre of Applied Engineering New Zealand, we are also promoting three other CApENZ members individually: O&B Equipment, Carac Couplings and Robt Stone Stainless.Click here to contact Ambrose for more information about this an future events.
- While at the National Manufacturing Week we will not only be promoting CApENZ but will also use the opportunity for specific market intelligence gathering as regards identifying potential strategic partners for local companies and identify other products and services we could look at supplying locally.
- We are also attending the South-East Asia Australian Offshore Conference (SEAAOC) in Darwin from 7th to 9th June 2004. While we are not taking a stand at the event, we will be using the event to assist with networking, building on existing relationships and building awareness of the engineering capability of CApENZ.

CApENZ Branding While Taranaki has for a long time been the premier region in New Zealand for heavy or applied engineering, not everyone in New Zealand or overseas realises this. Likewise, until now there has been no one 'Taranaki engineering sector' brand. What this means: We have not only created a brand and logo for the Centre of Applied Engineering New Zealand, we are now actively promoting the brand within New Zealand and overseas. The brand image is one that represents CApENZ as New Zealand's international centre of engineering excellence. All authorised CApENZ members can use the CApENZ brand on their marketing material (business cards, letterheads, website, marketing flyers, etc.). The CApENZ brand will add both strength and quality to individual member companies. You must have written authorisation from the CApENZ team to use the CApENZ logo and image.

Examples: We are currently promoting the CApENZ brand in the following ways:
- Online promotion of CApENZ through the promotion of the new CApENZ website (www.capenz.co.nz), onto individual member websites, and other organisations such as HERA (New Zealand's Heavy Engineering Research Association) and Venture Taranaki.
- More traditional promotion of CApENZ through the promotion of CApENZ to more traditional forms of press such as New Zealand's Engineering News, and at conferences. Brian Souness, the Director of CApENZ, is delivering a paper at the New Zealand Metals Conference 2004 in Christchurch in November 2004.
- The Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT) will shortly be conducting a New Zealand-wide marketing campaign to promote CApENZ and what it has brought to WITT.
- Engineering Taranaki Consortium will shortly be conducting a New Zealand-wide and international marketing campaign to further promote CApENZ.
- Given the innovative way that CApENZ has brought together academia and industry, WITT is looking to present and promote CApENZ on a national scale at the New Zealand Innovation Festival in Wellington on 30th June.
What to Do: Contact Ambrose Blowfield for approval to use the registered CApENZ logo on your website, business cards, letter heads, marketing flyers and other forms of external communications. Likewise, if you feel there are any additional opportunities or areas you feel we should be targeting, please contact Ambrose. Click here for Ambrose's contact details 5. Skills/Training CApENZ has created something unique in New Zealand. By bringing together both industry and academia in the form of Engineering Taranaki Consortium and Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT), it will make it easier to develop and deliver industry specific skills training and courses. Click here for more info What to Do: Click here to contact Ian Major to discuss your training needs. 6. Shared Services
Shared Services means the pooling together of resources to achieve a common goal. What this means: For example, if more than one Taranaki business is interested in a high capital cost item, such as a piece of machinery, but it does not warrant them purchasing the item alone, the CApENZ team can assist with co-ordinating a joint purchase of such an item. The benefit being to save time and money saving by stopping work going needlessly outside the Taranaki region. This will lead to even more industry competitiveness. Examples: There are several areas being looked at including large machinery items, specialised services, and joint shipping services. What to Do: Click here to contact Bev Batchelar. 7. Other
Other areas that are covered by CApENZ include: improved Research & Development capabilities at WITT, better Testing facilities and services at WITT, the creation of an Export Office and Best Practice assistance. What this means: Research & Development - Research & Development. WITT offers a wide range of specific R&D Capabilities. Click here for more information. Click here to contact Edward Smith.
Testing Facilities - Testing Facilities. There are well established testing facilities at WITT available to all engineering companies. Click here for more information. Click here to contact Chris Ryan.
Export Office - Export Office services are primarily the communication of relevant market intelligence to CApENZ members and assistance with overcoming barriers to trade. We are working closely with Venture Taranaki and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise to achieve this. For more information, click here to contact Ambrose
Best Practice - Best Practice. To ensure that Taranaki remains at the forefront of international engineering industry competitiveness, the CApENZ team will be identifying and assisting members with adopting processes and procedures that are internationally recognised. For more information, click here to contact Brian Souness.
What to Do: - Contact the above person named for each item.
8. The CApENZ Major Regional Initiative Explained The New Zealand Major Regional Initiative (MRI) Programme rightfully identified Taranaki as New Zealand's premier region for applied engineering. Following the success of Engineering Taranaki Consortium (ETC) www.engineeringtaranaki.co.nz, it was logical to build on and broaden what ETC had achieved for its members. Hence the Centre of Applied Engineering New Zealand (CApENZ) was created. Structure: - CApENZ is being delivered by an operational team made up of representatives of Engineering Taranaki Consortium and the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT).
- This operational team reports to an external advisory panel who in turn report to Venture Taranaki Trust (VTT). VTT have the governance role only and report back to New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, who created the MRI in Taranaki.
